If traveling is an art, then packing for travel is a science. And it just so happens that there is a great tool straight from the laboratory that is absolutely essential for travel packing. Read on to learn more!
If you’re like us, you bring your own shampoo and age-defying creams when you travel. The problem is how to bring these liquids without them exploding in your 3-1-1 TSA approved liquids bag and then all over your carry on bag.
Several manufacturers (like GooTube) make travel bottles. But even these suffer from leaking in the low pressure environment of jet travel.
There are two simple secrets to keeping your bottles from leaking mid-flight.
1. Fill your bottles to about 80% full
If you fill your bottles all the way full, they are more likely to leak. Instead, fill them about 80% full. If the material of your bottle allows it, squeeze out excess air and then screw the cap on tightly. This will prevent the bottles from leaking in many cases. But many plastic bottles — particularly those with flip-top caps or the little spigots — are still prone to leaking.
2. Wrap the caps of your bottles with Parafilm!
Here’s the real secret to keeping your bottles from leaking: PARAFILM.
Parafilm comes to us straight from the laboratory where it is commonly used to seal bottles and petri dishes. It is a super stretchy, pliable material. It has a texture part Saran wrap, part wax paper, part rubber gasket. It’s amazing stuff.
Parafilm comes in a whole variety of sizes. We like the 2″ x 250′ rolls for this task.
Parafilm comes with a waxed paper backing printed with a handy grid. A few squares is sufficient for sealing a travel sized bottle.
Cut off a few squares. Hold the bottle in one hand and press and hold one edge of the parafilm against the lid. Now stretch it! As you stretch it, begin wrapping it around the lid of the bottle. When you get to the end of the Parafilm square, just smash the end back onto the bottle. Parafilm sticks to itself particularly when stretched.
We guarantee 100% that filling your bottles 80% full and sealing the top with Parafilm that they will not leak. Try it!
